Hole No. 1

The Oaks

Could be the toughest starting hole in the country — the drive must be extremely accurate to reach the tree-lined fairway. The second shot is over water and sand bunkers to a very undulated green. The field would bargain for a par when standing on the tee. Welcome to Oak Tree.

“ This hole is probably one of the most difficult starting holes on any course I’ve played. A par 4 which requires an accurate tee shot to a very narrow fairway. A good drive will set up a medium iron to an elevated green above a lake. A poor drive may require a layup and a touch job to make a par.”

Dub's Dread

The water, left, will definitely come into play with the predominate cross wind and out-of-bounds right. Club selection to this split level green is very important — a shot long will be welcome by the surrounding lake.

“A drive in the fairway is important because of a demanding second shot to a green that slopes severely away from the players. Although this is one of the shortest par 4’s on the course the water and shape of the green make it one of the most difficult.”

Hole No. 3

Coe's Corner

Rated as one of the “unreachables,” this great hole requires target golf from the tee to the green. If this elevated green is missed in regulation, it will take a super short game for an opportunity to salvage a par.

“ A true three-shot par 5, the 584 yard third hole requires pinpoint accuracy on every shot. A drive hit to the right side of the fairway avoids being blocked out by trees on the left. A long, layup second shot coming to rest in a valley between oak trees on the right and a bunker on the left, sets up a wedge shot to a small plateau green that is guarded by a deep pot bunker in front. A demanding hole, a par five is a welcome sight.”

Hole No. 4

Waterloo

One of the most talked about and photographed holes at Oak Tree. Truly one of the great par 3’s built by Pete Dye. This demanding par 3 will entice a player to bail out right — undulations and downhill slope will definitely test the player’s short game from the right side. Pray for prevailing south breezes.

“This par 3 requires a middle to long iron from an elevated tee with water on two sides. The safe play is to the right but leaves a difficult up and down. Par is a very good score on this hole.”

Hole No. 5

Oak Tree

Players drive will have to carry over the oak tree used for the Club’s emblem to reach the ideal position. This hole may tempt the long hitters to go for the green in two. The green is located on a peninsula surrounded on three sides by both bunkers and water — usually the gambler loses.

“A par 5 that is reachable in two shots but requires an extremely accurate second shot. The drive is played over a large oak tree that was used to design the Oak Tree logo. A middle iron and then a wedge is the safe way to get to this green virtually surrounded by sand and water.”

Hole No. 6

Muirfield

Accuracy off the tee is a must on this short par 4. The green sits at an angle for the golfer’s second shot and is most difficult to get the ball close for a birdie putt.

Dye's Dread

This dogleg left hole has water and trees left and a very unfriendly bunker right which must be avoided off the tee. The entrance to the green is relatively small and is guarded right and left by deep bunkers.

“This is a dogleg left par 4 with a large deep bunker at the front left of the green. A prevailing south wind will make this fairway tough to hit. A medium iron to a relatively flat green will offer a chance for a birdie.”

Harbor Town

Wind will be a definite factor on the golfer’s shot. Water and bunker left must be avoided, but the deep face bunker right is not the place to be either.

The Plateau

A great hole to finish the front nine. Possibly the hardest driving hole on the course. Drive must be hit to plateau area to have a decent second shot. Deep grass bunker to the left of green will cause players many headaches. Par will be gladly accepted by golfers.

Hole No. 10

Teeth of the Dog

Players must steer away from natural waste area running the entire length of the hole on the right. Target for drive is bunker in center of fairway. A much needed birdie starting the back nine is a possibility.

“Number 10 is the most straightforward hole on the course, but if you don't avoid the bunker in the middle of the fairway, it's a pitch-out. The front-left hole location is very difficult, but the back-right location is no bargain in a strong north wind”

Windmill

A great hole which will gain the respect of the entire field. A solid straight drive must be played to allow golfers a chance on the second shot. Elevated green will only accept a high solid second shot. The green is the most flat on the course — Thank goodness.

“This is a long, tough par 4 with a fairway that slopes from right to left and a sharply elevated green. A short miss leaves a difficult pitch that has to land soft. A ball that is on in regulation will have a relatively flat putt, with a little slop from front to back.”

Prairie Dunes

A beautiful rustic hole — that instills fear when viewed from the tee. With predominate wind at the golfer’s back, you will play fairway wood or long iron to very tight landing area. The green is well protected by trees and bunkers. A real beauty.

Postage Stamp

A magnificent short par 3, the entire rock walls are hand-layed native stone. Golfers must pay attention to water left and deep grass bunker, right. With a good shot, birdie is possibility here.

“This is a great example of how Pete Dye designed “gettable” greens with a shorter club. Depending on the wind, it's anywhere from a wedge to 8-iron but you have to challenge the rock wall and water on the left to get it close. Miss it right, and now you are chipping back towards the water. Thankfully the green is pretty flat.”

Hole No. 14

Augusta

This great hole will ask to see the player’s full talent. The drive must be strategically placed on this dogleg right. The second shot must be guided between a bunker left and a large oak to the right. The green is very undulated and will demand the golfer’s attention. “Tool Kit” required to finish off this hole.

“14 is a hole that you don’t want to play into a north wind, and you must get it in the fairway to have a chance. The green has three distinct pin locations, with the “bowl” location the most forgiving. With a south wind, the back location is probably the hardest.”

Deerfield

This is the most underrated hole on the golf course. The drive must be placed in the fairway to allow the second shot to find its way through a chute of large oak trees. The green sits at an angle to the fairway and the back right pin placement will cause many troubles.

The Box Car

This will definitely be the golfer’s best opportunity to make birdie. A well-placed drive to the left of the winding creek will allow the ability to reach this par 5 in two. This split level green should not be missed to the left as a deep bunker and creek will be waiting.

“A true risk/reward par 5 coming down the stretch. An aggressive tee shot down the right side will leave you a shorter club into a reachable hole. Hitting it left off the tee makes it a true 3-shotter. The three-tiered green demands a precise wedge for your third shot if you have to lay up. This is your best chance at a closing birdie.”

Eternity

A super par 3 which must be played entirely over water. The pin placements will greatly vary the club selections. A beach bunker to the right and large mounds to the left await an errant shot. The name “Eternity” is certainly appropriate.

The Valley of Sin

Many matches will be decided on this exciting finishing hole. The drive must be played to the right side of the tree-lined fairway for the optimum second shot. The second shot must be very accurate to this three tiered green. A huge deep grass bunker right will be a nuisance and must be avoided. Who won, you or Oak Tree?

“Hitting the fairway here is a must when playing into the prevailing south wind. A left tee shot will leave a blocked second shot into this elevated green complex. It is best to avoid the valley in the middle of the fairway where a short approach becomes even more difficult. A sharply sloped green from back to front requires you to be below the hole for a good look at a closing birdie.”
